The benefits of green roofs

There are several reasons contributing to the increasing interest towards green roofs. Among the many the most popular is undoubtedly the need to restore a harmonious contact with nature, already far too usurped by the uncontrolled development of settlements and industry of our city.

The decision to build the green roofs offer many technical and economic advantages:

THE PROTECTION OF WATERPROOFING
The green roof is the most efficient system for the protection of waterproofing. With a green roof, is it possible to build a 'shield' over the top surface of the protective waterproof covering providing the advantages of mechanical protection (through the ballast), protection from UV rays, protection from hail.
A green roof can protect against changes in temperature ensuring a longer life to the whole system of waterproofing. No less important is the chemical defense of waterproof, in fact, without the green layer, it would be in immediate contact with stormwater full of acid.

ADJUSTMENT OF MICROCLIMATE
The thermal benefits of a green roof are great especially during the summer. In the warmer months, in addition to increased thermal insulation and vegetation and the substrate culture, provide protection from solar radiation. The consequent reduction in temperature, coupled with the absence of strong temperature variations, can produce substantial energy savings.

ADJUSTING THE FLOW OF PRECIPITATION
The greening of the roof allows a significant diversification of the times of stormwater runoff. The growing medium and water storage layer, absorb the water that comes on the cover. They allow the detention of a quantity of water coverage up to 70%, and they allow a lengthening of the time of disposal. So the exhaust systems that are able to remove higher amounts of water for the same section of pipe.

PROTECTION AGAINST NOISE
The mass of the layers that make up the green roof provides good acoustic power helping to improve the noise insulation of air cover and reducing the noise level inside the neighboring areas.

TRANSFORMATION OF CARBON DIOXIDE INTO OXYGEN
The green roofs, if present in adequate proportion of the territory, providing the vegetation otherwise missing in areas of high population density can transform carbon dioxide into oxygen.

REDUCTION IN THE PRESENCE OF DUST IN THE AIR
The green roof contributes to the reduction of dust in the air because, in addition to the effect 'sponge' exercised by the plants that capture the particles, the reduction of thermal currents originating from the overheating of surfaces, which are able to maintain significant suspension amount of dust.

THE GREEN ROOF IS A SUITABLE TOOL FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH.

The urban ecosystem is significantly enhanced, the green roof becomes living environment for animals and plants and our cities become more beautiful and more livable.
